I’ve traveled all over the world, and in 31 years this is the first coffee shop that’s tried to charge me an extra 4,000–5,000 COP for regular whole milk in an iced latte. Not oat milk. Not almond milk. Just… milk. The ingredient that literally makes it a latte.
When I questioned it, they acted like it was completely normal.
By that logic, I assume the next menu update will include:
* Water surcharge for an Americano
* Ice surcharge for an iced coffee
* Cup rental fee
* Air-conditioning convenience fee
Thankfully I caught it before paying, but I can’t imagine how many tourists don’t notice.
If you’re going to charge separately for a basic ingredient that’s already part of the drink, at least be upfront about it. Safe to say I’ll be getting my coffee somewhere else.
A special shout-out to our waiter, Santiago, who truly elevated our evening. His attention to detail was impeccable, and he paced the meal perfectly, making us feel genuinely cared for throughout the night. He went above and beyond to ensure our anniversary felt personal and celebratory.
If you are in Medellín and looking for a world-class culinary experience with top-tier service, this is the place. Thank you, Santiago, and the entire team for a night we won't forget!
Around GBP(£) 47 per person, with glasses of wine.
Dis not stay in the hotel.
In summary: great food, decent service, underwhelming drinking experience, slightly overpriced.
Food
Great all the way. Delicate, flavorful, colorful, diverse and contrasted in flavors and colors. Many of the “19” courses are served at once. Food was spread over 12 separate serving stages or sets, in 19 different plates. For example: 1 of the 19 courses was just the smooth butter itself. Coffee and its 3 little cakes counted as 3 courses.
Presentation
Several courses (e.g. prawns, salad) were served in the same type of plates. These were, in my opinion, too big and did not best put in value what is being served.
Service
Pleasant staff, not intrusive, good description of the food; (almost always) knowledgeable when questions are asked, good standing and live-table preparations…
With a few oddities:
- Twice, the accompanying decoration was taken off the table before I finished I finished my plate (it should be remove at or after I’m done with the plate).
- Thrice for the same course, 3 different waiters came to ask if I was done within a couple of minutes although I clearly still had food in my plate. Had they observed me for a couple of minutes, they would have seen I was still eating it. This made me feel a bit rushed.
Ambience.
Quiet original ambient music. Classy furnitures. Direct view on the open space cuisine, the entire cooking staff.
Drinking
Certainly the more disappointing aspect of Elcielo, underwhelming compared the food.
- For starters, only 4 wines for 19 courses is limited. I learnt after the fact there is a 6-wine pairing option but it was never offered to me. In my opinion, 1 wine pairing = 1 true course (many of the 19 courses are very small and served at once).
- Second, I never knew when/how I should time my drinking. I never got a piece of paper laying out the menu, so I never knew whether my glass should be spread over 2, 3 courses or more. For example: my glass of white wine was spread over 5 courses (3 sets). My glass of red over 2 courses (2 sets) only. So I ran dry on the white and wasn’t done with the red by the time dessert arrived.
- Third: timing and serving of the red. That (Italian) wine needed at least 15-30 minutes to breathe but was served just minutes before the plate was served. So I had to wait longer to enjoy it and also slowed down my eating… which is likely why the staff tried to clean the table (thrice) before I was done.
- Fourth, it is overpriced given the served wines. Don’t get me wrong, the wines were all good, but I’ve had better, richer, and more generous wine pairings experiences at half the price (in France) in similar restaurants.
Coffee experience
Certainly dramatic given the amount of liquid nitrogen used. Fun. Coffee is served in a very small cup, about 5 sips only, 6 with a stretch. That would have been fine if all I had was coffee (it takes about 4 sips to just taste a coffee). But this also came with 3 small cakes, each at least 2 mouthfuls, each mouthful should be paired with a sip of coffee. So do the math, and that cup was about half the needed size. A bigger cup wouldn’t be pretty though. So perhaps this should be served like wine, i.e. with a refill when the cup is empty.
Bar
I wanted to the try the local signature cocktail with aguardiente and cachaca. Unfortunately that might be the one cocktail they couldn’t make because they no longer had the most important juice for this cocktail. So that was disappointing. Given the standing and price of the place, I would expect kitchen and bars to always be fully stocked. It was barely 1pm and only a single other table was in use, so I see little excuse for nothing having the juice.
The bar was unable to improvise another aguardiente-based cocktail, so I ended up taking a Juarez, which was well done, but not the type of the flavors I originally was hoping to get.
Our waiter, Ángel, was exceptional. From the moment we sat down, he delivered a level of service that was both professional and deeply personal. His communication was clear, thoughtful, and never rushed. He walked us through each of the 17 courses, describing every dish with a level of detail that showed not just knowledge, but passion. He struck the perfect balance—present when needed, but always giving us space to enjoy the moment.
What made the evening stand out wasn’t just the food (which was phenomenal—creative, flavorful, and clearly made with intention). It was the feeling that Ángel genuinely loved what he was doing. He wasn’t just serving dishes; he was guiding us through an experience. We had a bit of small talk toward the end about his journey, and even that felt natural—never intrusive, just authentic.
The entire meal was unforgettable. You could taste the quality of the ingredients, the creativity behind each plate, and the attention to detail in every bite. My girlfriend and I left feeling grateful—like we had experienced something truly special.
I’m already looking forward to visiting again the next time I’m in Medellín, and I’d love to try one of their locations in the States as well. Thank you to the El Cielo team—and especially Ángel—for an incredible night.
The service staff were attentive and explained each dish well and how to eat the dish to extract the best flavours. The atmosphere was welcoming and I enjoyed watching the kitchen.

This meal is Colombia and I was transported with every course. Probably the best and most unique dining experience I’ve ever had.
After years of waiting, we finally secured a table at this stunning venue. The ambiance was beautiful, and the service was excellent.
While the food was presented impressively and featured interesting flavors, it didn't quite meet our expectations. Perhaps the multi-course format compromised temperature and doneness.
We appreciated the experience, but it didn't leave us eager to return. Maybe that's why tables are becoming more available...
The tasting menu was nothing short of spectacular. Each course was thoughtfully curated, beautifully presented, and rich in flavor. The artistic presentation and interactive elements added an immersive touch that made the evening feel like more than just a meal—it was an experience. Elcielo’s unique take on Colombian flavors elevated traditional dishes into something truly unforgettable.
The staff was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, explaining each course with passion and precision. They even made thoughtful accommodations for our group and celebrated the occasion in a way that felt personal and genuine.
Whether you’re visiting Medellín for a special event or simply want to experience one of the best fine dining establishments in the city, Elcielo is a must. Highly recommended for those looking to indulge in creativity, culture, and culinary excellence all in one place.
As soon as you walk through their golden gates into an airy and modern interior, prepare for 2-3 hours of a multi-sensory journey through Colombian flavors. The flow and pace of service is impeccable—we waited just the right amount of time for each dish. Many dishes included impressive table service and whimsical elements. All of them were exceptional and a delight to eat.
I am especially impressed because I asked for a vegetarian adaptation and it is the first time I don’t feel like I missed out on anything during an omnivorous tasting menu experience by not eating meat. The vegetarian adaptations seemed even more creative and exciting than the meat versions. And they were certainly just as filling and flavorful. Hats off to the incredible kitchen team!
Be sure to come hungry and ready for unexpected surprises as well as one of the best meals of your life. If you’re on the fence about booking, don’t think twice. It is well worth it. Especially considering how much you would pay for ElCielo in the U.S.
